Job description

IOWN Renewable Energy is seeking a Financial Analyst who will use financial models and data analytical skills to generate renewable energy project models. The position will be responsible for the financial and commercial modeling activities associated with project and business origination, project financing, offtake, and project M&A and sales for renewable energy projects (wind, solar, Solar + Storage and SAS (Stand-alone energy storage) in North America.

The candidate will work for a rapidly growing renewable energy company headquartered in San Diego which seeks an innovative, focused, and motivated leader to start a team of professionals doing commercial modeling of projects and deal structures.

Remote candidates will be considered, but preference will be given to candidates who live in or can relocate to San Diego area, CA.

Seniority level will be based on candidate experience. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Commercial Modeling and Financial Analysis

  • All financial modeling activities required to support project development, project M&A, project financing, project sales, and securing offtake for projects.
  • Create, manage, and own project financial models (levered and unlevered), including tax equity. Experience actively building project models and model platforms is strongly preferred. Experience with the modeling of renewable tax equity monetization structures also strongly preferred but not required.
  • Support market intelligence and research efforts when moving into new markets and areas in the US.
  • Be able to analyze, recommend, and work with various market forecasting platforms/ models that are inherent to bidding for offtake for generation or energy storage.

Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively and closely with Development, Power Origination and Transaction lead within the organization by providing modeling and analytical support necessary to bid into offtake RFP’s and bilateral offtakes opportunities under various structures.
  • Work collaboratively with development, power marketing and technical resources to scrub and manage all input assumptions to evaluate the economics of potential projects and identify key drivers of project value and risks.
  • Support Wind, PV, and Energy Storage (currently emphasis on BESS) leads during project acquisition opportunities for Wind, PV, and Energy Storage projects in North America market by modeling expected project value and forecasted capital sources.
  • Support Transaction lead on interaction with project finance banks, tax equity investors, infrastructure funds, and strategic buyers, including preparation and delivery of marketing material.

Software and Experience

  • Very strong Excel modeling proficiency with experience working with large excel market data sets and API data sites.
  • Experience with MySQL and /or Power BI is desired. Experience in using R or Python is a plus. Knowledge of MATLAB, Tableau or other simulation software is a strong plus.
  • Experience with the Ascend platform and Hitachi’s Velocity Suite is strongly preferred. Ability to work with other data sources and use APIs strongly preferred.
  • Experience with storage assets and solar plus storage optimization is a very strong plus.
  • Experience working with wholesale electricity forward curves and forward curves for RECs, Capacity and renewable project capex is a strong plus. Additional experience working with natural gas forward curves and/or storage or tolling models is also a plus.
  • Experience and/or the ability to build models of physical transmission wheeling a strong plus.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in business, finance, math, computer science, or engineering discipline.
  • MBA in finance or masters in stem discipline with modeling experience is preferred.
  • At least 5 years’ overall business experience in renewable energy industry with the last 2 years in financial modeling. Similar modeling experience in the wholesale energy structure will get consideration.
  • Self-motivated with a high level of initiative and accountability.

Responsibilities

  • Manage various aspects of a project transactions, including project valuation for due diligence, data room management, term sheet and transaction documents review, project closing monitoring.
  • Participate in presenting project acquisition opportunities to seek the necessary internal approvals prior to initiating an LOI, or proceeding with formal due diligence, negotiations and/ or acquisition.
  • Use forward curves in support of market-based asset valuation studies, regional power market assessments, and price analyses.
  • Participate in regular team meetings over phone, video conference or in person.
